Ken Harris will be lecturing at the prestigous BDA Conference 2011 in Manchester in May of this year. the subject is minimal Preparation Porcelain Veneers. Below is Ken’s synopsis of his presentation as printed in the BDA conference brochure.
“Many dentists prepare teeth for veneers far too aggressively without any consistent approach to the process. The result is often over prepared teeth. My generation were never taught how to prepare teeth as undergraduates; in my day we were shown a drawing of a crown prep or a veneer prep and told to go away and do it. When all was finished we were told to call over our instructors who would then critique the result (often sarcastically and with little positive to say, if my memory serves me!). However, not much was actually taught by way of how to achieve the finished preparation shape.
I have developed a protocol whereby the standard veneer preparation is broken down into 8 individual stages. Each step is undertaken one after another in a step by step process to achieve very minimal tooth reduction, but at the same time enough clearance for the technicians to do their work. The “8 step prep” describes a consistent “framework” to be used every time thereby fostering a consistent approach to tooth preparation.
This is a great “back to basics” presentation for any dentist currently providing veneers or equally for those who wish to provide veneers, but are perhaps less confident of how to approach “minimal preparation”
